Disney World vs Disneyland What Sets Them Apart

We recently got back from visiting Disneyland and it was so magical to get to visit the place where it all started. We've been to Walt Disney World numerous times, but it was really interesting to finally get to Disneyland and really see how similar and how both parks are so very different. If you live close to either park, traveling to the other may not be something you get a chance to do during your lifetime, or you might be curious about planning an adventure across the country to check out one of the most magical places on earth. I'll dive into some more park specifics in the future, but I wanted to give an eagle eye view of some of the similarities and differences between the different park experiences.

Size and Scope

Disney World, located in Orlando, Florida, is much larger than Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Disney World covers about 25,000 acres, roughly the size of San Francisco, while Disneyland spans just 500 acres. This difference affects the number of parks, attractions, and amenities available.

Disney World includes four theme parks plus two water parks:

  • Magic Kingdom

  • EPCOT

  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios

  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom

  • Typhoon Lagoon

  • Blizzard Beach

In contrast, Disneyland Resort has two parks:

  • Disneyland Park

  • Disney California Adventure Park

The vast size of Disney World means it offers more variety and space to explore. Visitors often spend several days to experience everything. Disneyland’s smaller size makes it easier to navigate in a shorter time, which suits guests with limited vacation days. In our most recent adventure to Disneyland, we were able to get to experience just about everything in 2 days, 1 day at each park. If you had a park hopper ticket, you could really experience everything in 3 days. The last time we visited Walt Disney World, we splurged for park hopper tickets and spent about 7 days "hopping" between the parks spending at least 1-2 days' worth of time at every park.

Attractions and Experiences

Both resorts feature classic Disney rides and characters, but some attractions are unique to each location. For example, Disneyland is home to the original Sleeping Beauty Castle, while Disney World boasts the larger and more elaborate Cinderella Castle. I was truly floored to experience the difference between Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty's castle. There is nothing like walking down Mainstreet and seeing the dazzling 189-foot castle in Magic Kingdom at Disney World. When we turned the corner and first saw Sleeping Beauty's castle at Disneyland, I was amazed at how small the castle appeared, standing at only 77 feet. WOAH! What a difference!

Disneyland offers exclusive rides like:

  • Indiana Jones Adventure

  • Matterhorn Bobsleds

  • Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage

Disney World features unique experiences such as:

  • EPCOT’s World Showcase with pavilions representing 11 countries

  • Animal Kingdom’s Kilimanjaro Safaris

  • Rockin' Roller Coaster in Hollywood Studios

It was such an enjoyable experience getting compare several rides that are at each park. Several of our favorites to compare:

  • Guardians of the Galaxy-both SOOO different yet both AMAZING experiences

  • Space Mountain-far better in Disneyland

  • Haunted Mansion-outstanding experience if you get to do the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay in Disneyland

  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad-pretty comparable at both parks

Layout and Navigation

Disneyland’s compact layout allows guests to walk between its two parks easily. The resort is designed for convenience, with hotels and dining options close by. This makes it ideal for families or visitors who prefer a more relaxed pace. There are 3 main "Disney" hotels that are within walking distance of the 2 parks and Downtown Disney. There are also several good neighbor hotels nearby that offer great prices and are a quick ride to the park entrance.

Disney World’s parks are spread out, requiring transportation between them. There are over 25 resorts with unique theming spread out around all 4 parks. The resort offers buses, monorails, the skyliner and boats to move guests efficiently. This setup demands more planning but provides a sense of adventure and discovery as you travel between distinct themed areas.

Dining and Accommodation

Disney World has over 30 resort hotels ranging from budget to luxury, many with unique themes and amenities. Dining options are extensive, including fine dining, character meals, and international cuisine, especially at EPCOT.

Disneyland has fewer hotels on-site, with a focus on three main resorts. Dining is plentiful but more limited compared to Disney World. The smaller scale means guests often explore nearby Anaheim for additional food choices. With our most recent visit, crowds were much lower around rope drop and typically picked up later in the day. We were there during the last day of their holiday celebration and the crowds were pretty extensive, but overall, we felt the crowds were much more manageable then Disney World. Another unique aspect of Disneyland is that park reservations are still required. This allows the parks to keep crowds to a more manageable level during busy times of the year.

Crowd Levels and Best Times to Visit

Disneyland tends to be busier on weekends and holidays due to its proximity to Los Angeles. Disney World attracts visitors year-round, with peak crowds during school vacations and holidays.

If you want to avoid crowds, consider visiting Disneyland on weekdays during the off-season. For Disney World, early January and late September usually have lighter attendance.

Ticket Prices and Packages

Ticket pricing varies between the two resorts but generally, Disney World tickets cost more due to the larger number of parks and experiences. Both offer single-day and multi-day passes, with discounts for children and Florida residents. Disney is always coming out with new promotions throughout the year, so even once you book your vacation, you are always eligible for those current promotions. One of our favorite promotions over the past two years has been the free water park day on the day you check in.

Disney World also sells park hopper tickets that allow access to multiple parks in one day, which is useful given the resort’s size. Disneyland offers similar options but with fewer parks to choose from.

Atmosphere and Vibe

Disneyland has a nostalgic charm as the original park opened by Walt Disney in 1955. It feels more intimate and historic, with many attractions preserved from the early days. It was enjoyable to experience some of the early rides with such a simplistic yet nostalgic feel going through the ride.

Disney World feels grander and more modern, designed as a massive vacation destination. It offers a variety of experiences beyond rides, including golf courses, water parks, and shopping districts.

Both parks excel at creating immersive environments, but your preference may depend on whether you want a cozy, classic Disney feel or a sprawling, diverse adventure.

Final Thoughts

Both parks offer some amazing character experiences. Both parks offer fun character meet and greets and dining experiences. Disney World offers a lot of the classic meet and greets with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and all the princesses. We loved Disneyland for their unique character experiences. They had so many characters that would just roam throughout the park and would be willing to stop for a quick photo. There were few sets ups that had long lines and waits to see the characters. Typically, at Disney, some of the meet and greet waits can span over 30 min to an hour really taking away from the rest of your park time.
