Traveling in a car with kids can be both thrilling and daunting. With the right preparation, your road trip can be filled with fun and family bonding. However, long hours in a car can lead to restlessness. With the holidays right around the corner, this guide shares practical tips to keep things smooth and enjoyable.

Plan Your Route
Planning your route ahead of time is crucial. Use a GPS or mapping app to identify the best roads and interesting stops. Most recently we decided to drive to Disney World in Florida. We knew this was going to be a LOOOONGGG trip but tried to make it as fun and stress free as possible. We decided to break up our trip into 2 days to cut down on too much time in the car. We plotted out a good stopping point about halfway down so we could break things up, swim and get a good dinner and rest before finishing out our trip. When booking our hotels we are always looking for pools, free breakfast and a decent place that is clean and not overly expensive.
Pack Smart
Efficient packing can transform your trip. Create a checklist of essentials to avoid stress later on. Here are some suggestions:
Snacks: Healthy options like apple slices, carrot sticks, and trail mix can help maintain energy levels. Research shows that snacks high in protein can help improve focus and mood, making them better choices for long trips. By packing your own snacks can save you money from always eating out or filling up on junk food at truck stops.
Drinks: Keep everyone hydrated with a cooler packed with water, flavored water, and juice boxes.
Entertainment: Audiobooks like "Harry Potter" or music playlists featuring family favorites can create a fun atmosphere. Don’t forget travel-friendly toys or coloring books to keep young ones busy.
We drove home from Disney a year ago and it honestly surprised me how well that went. This time, I wasn't so sure how it was going to go. My husband had a BRILLANT idea to collect small little items like stickers, Pokémon cards, Disney pins, and mini figures and put them in a mystery bag. We had enough little items that every 30 min it would be "givy" time! The kids would get so excited to get to pick out of the mystery bag! By the time the kids picked, checked out the new item and got settled, it was time to pick again! This honestly made the 14+ hour trip down go by SOO fast! It was so fun to see how excited they got anticipating what they were going to pick out next.
Schedule Breaks
Plan regular breaks every two to three hours to let everyone stretch and refresh. Research indicates that taking breaks can enhance concentration and reduce irritability. When plotting our route, we are always looking for fun playgrounds, neat stores to check out, finding a spot for a picnic lunch or a fun historical landmark to explore. One of the most intense places we recently stopped was Buc-ees. HOLY COW this place is INSANE! I've never seen a rest stop like this. They have delicious food, very clean restrooms and the cutest mascot! Definitely a must experience location!

Create a Road Trip Playlist or Find Kid Friendly Podcasts
Music plays a vital role in keeping spirits high during the drive. Collaborate with your family to build a playlist of everyone’s favorite songs. You might even find that singing along boosts everyone's mood. There are also a ton of kid friendly podcasts that are out there that can be enjoyed by the whole family. They can be educational, entertaining or even spooky!
Use Technology Wisely
While family time is precious, technology can also be beneficial. Download movies, educational apps, or shows to keep kids entertained. As a guideline, balance screen time with interactions. Encourage kids to take breaks from screens to enjoy the scenery and spot animals or landmarks. A survey found that 70% of parents found that tech-related activities kept kids calmer during long waits.
Keep Comfort in Mind
Comfort is essential for a pleasant experience. Dress kids in loose, breathable clothes. Bringing along their favorite pillows, stuffies or blankets makes a world of difference. A well-ventilated car is important; ensure the temperature is just right to avoid any discomfort that could lead to crankiness.
Engage Kids in the Journey
Involve your kids in the travel experience. Assign them responsibilities, like helping with navigation or picking a snack stop. This not only keeps them engaged but also fosters a sense of ownership. Encourage them to keep a travel journal. They can jot down thoughts, sketch, or collect souvenirs that remind them of the trip.
Make It Educational
Road trips are fantastic learning opportunities. Use the journey to teach kids about geography or history. Discuss the states you are passing through and share interesting facts, such as how the highest point in the contiguous United States is Mount Whitney in California, standing at 14,505 feet. Educational games like “20 Questions” or “I Spy” can stimulate their minds while keeping boredom at bay.
Relax and Enjoy the Journey
Traveling with kids can become a joyful adventure with a little planning and creativity. Fostering a good atmosphere—whether it's through snacks, music, or breaks—ensures that everyone has fun. Keep things flexible and ready for spontaneous stops.
By implementing these tips, you’ll pave the way for a memorable road trip filled with laughter, exploration, and cherished family moments. Happy travels!
